How are combination field values sorted when displayed as drop downs the Trade interface and Product Combination content managed web area?

Thread A question was asked where in the Trade interface, and on a content managed web page containing a Product Combination area, if the fields of a combination product are displayed as drop downs how are values in the drop downs sorted?
