Why is Total Sales (In Progress)' versus 'Total Sales (Since Project Creation)' figure in the Order Sales Statistics Administration Centre interface different?

A question was asked where within Administration Centre, under the Statistics menu, within the Sales Summary interface, after clicking on the More Info button, in the Order Sales Statistics interface, why would the two sales figures displayed "Total Sales (In Progress)" figure and "Total Sales (Since Project Creation)" have a different value? Can you explain how these totals are determined?

Within the Administration Centre's Order Sales Statistics interface the two statistics are calculated as follows:

Total Sales (In Progress)
The sum of all shopping basket totals, excluding tax. This factors in all baskets, including guest baskets that may have been abandoned, as well as user baskets that have not been changed for any period of time. If you wish to see more accurate basket totals (sales in progress), then navigate to the Basket Statistics interface where it breaks down the totals further, and allows filtering by date.

Total Sales (Since Project Creation)
The sum of all sales orders totals, excluding tax. This factors in all orders that have been successfully submitted over the lifetime of the project, excluding declined orders, unconfirmed orders, and pending orders.
